South St. Paul's Dave Palmquist, the last remaining coach from Minnesota's inaugural season of high school girls hockey in 1994-95, is among members of the first class of the Minnesota Girls Hockey Coaches Association's Hall of Fame. The class, announced Tuesday, includes Chuck Scanlon, who coached Apple Valley in the first championship game against Palmquist and South St. Paul in 1995. Scanlon, also a member of the Minnesota boys soccer coaches hall of fame, won state girls hockey championships in 1995 and '98. Palmquist has led the Packers to four state championships. Others to be inducted Oct. 11 at the Schwan Center in Blaine are Tim Morris, Bob May, Jane Ring, Tom Maeckelbergh and, posthumously, Charlie Stryker and Brano Stankovsky. In other news: -- Burnsville has hired Pat Feely to return as softball coach. He previously coached the Blaze for 13 seasons, leading them to a 249-62 record and two state championships. -- Cumberland (Wis.) unveils its $2.7 million football stadium Friday against Chetek-Weyerhaeuser. -- Baldwin-Woodville senior pitcher Abby Klopp has given a verbal commitment to play softball at Indiana State. Last month, the two-time All-Pioneer Press selection helped the Minnesota Sting 16U team finish third in a 64-team national tournament in Huntington Beach, Calif. -- Ashenafi Hatte, a junior at St. Paul Washington, had a memorable couple of days last week. On Thursday, he scored two goals in the Eagles' 3-1 boys soccer victory over New Life Academy. The next day, running in his first-ever cross country meet, he won the Central Invitational with a 5-kilometer time of 16 minutes, 15 seconds at St. Catherine University. -- Joe Virga of Chisago Lakes returned two interceptions, covering 72 and 91 yards, for touchdowns in the Wildcats' 40-7 victory over Big Lake in Week 1. -- St. Croix Lutheran senior hitter Kira Grev led the Crusaders to victories over Mayer Lutheran and New Life Academy last week with 45 kills and a kill percentage of .495. She also had 50 digs and a serve percentage of 97.7 percent. -- East Ridge's Nick Leach averaged 15.2 yards per carry in the Raptors' 48-15 victory over White Bear Lake. He had 228 yards and two touchdowns. -- Eagan swept the top three spots en route to the girls title at the Dakota County Invitational cross country race last week. Anny Van Wyk was first in 11:44.3, followed by teammates Kelli Praska (11:53.4) in second and Raissa Hansen (11:54) in third. The Wildcats won the prestigious meet with 36 points. Lakeville South was second with 58. -- The start of Friday's Suburban East Conference football game between Park and host Mounds View has been pushed back to 7:30 p.m. in observance of Rosh Hashanah. -- Men's basketball coaches Richard Pitino of Minnesota and Bo Ryan of Wisconsin are among featured speakers at the HoopsNet Basketball Coaches Clinic on Sept. 28 at Tartan High School.
