02.15.2010 - Day 5 - Game Day

Breakfast at the hotel.
Meeting at 9.30 with group and review of games with supervisors.
Off to the rink skating the Canada (10) Swiss (1) game with Nicole (Referee from Germany) and Anna (Lines from Finland). The rink was super loud and the crazy. They did the wave during our game; we usually don't have enough people in the building at home to accomplish this. My family could not get tickets as all the Canada games are sold out but they watched me on TV and many people at home! Somewhere in between Ken, one of our hosts took us to meet his daughter Sara, who is one of the mascots!
Went back to the hotel and changed after the game then back to the rink to watch the late game.

Mo, Steve and Robbie came out and skated on the treadmill with me. Super Troopers! What did Mo say? My legs are jello... Oh! Was I not to repeat that:) Skating on the treadmill is a ton harder than it looks. Channel 11 news sent out a camera crew and did a short interview; it should show in the next 3-5 days? It turned out to be on the 6pm news!

Mom, Katie, Ava and Cory are helping me do laundry, pack and get ready to go. They brought over dinner and Dad picked up my dry cleaning. Family is GOOD!

I got home and it was pretty cold (52 degrees) in the house; our furnace is broken. Thank you sooo much for Jake and Dad coming over to help out! We took a trip to wally world and Cory and I are now the proud owners of 4 space heaters. Thurs 01.28.10 CORY'S BIRTHDAY!!!

After work: pick up Aunt Candy at home and drive to Davenport, IA. Joy and Roger were good enough to stay up late and wait for our arrival and let us crash for the night.

Sat 01.30.10 Candy and I got a short visit in with family: Al, Betty, Joy, Roger, Tyler and Rachel.

Junior hockey game: Quad City Flames (6) vs. Chicago Force (5) in Davenport... OT and 9 person shoot out with Steve and Chason

Highlight of the game: Coach McDermott from Quad City wanted to know if it was my first junior game because he didn't agree when I tossed his center out of a face off in their defensive zone, while they were short-handed, for slashing another kid twice and spitting in my face (figuratively speaking). I told him not to worry about it that I have done plenty of games on the lines to which he sarcastically said well, then that answers the question, it must be your first junior game, and then proudly announced to his players "hey boys, it's her first junior game". I asked the player closest to me on the bench as I was trying not to laugh, "so he yells a lot", to which he said "at least he is not yelling at us". I talked to him in the hallway after the game, he was a coach a few years back for the MJHL and I had I worked his tryout camp over a long weekend, when Chris Blasius was scouting for him. I am pretty sure I confused as I had no league crest, changed my name, had a pony tail, he didn't like me tossing his center or he could have been just trying to work the new guy? It is fun sometimes when no one knows who you are:)

Got home Friday night in the rain / ice storm and pulled into the driveway around midnight after the game. The car only made it about 1/3rd of the way up then slid back into the snow; couldn't get up (ice) and couldn't get down (snow) so I left it right there blocking the sidewalk. I called Cory, in the house, and he helped me bring my bag in up the ice rink of a driveway.

This is where I almost get kicked out of the rink for not buying a ticket, but the rink guy said he was sorry for the confusion and I'm back in to watch the game... The Dad's on the Chaska team were trying to teach me how to use the new camera... I need to get the manual out and read it!

Saturday 12. 19 Junior game in Maple Grove: Knights (5) vs. Wildcats (1) (Cal is still on the bench) with Missling, Stodgell and Labuda supervising us. The whole gang was there to support me... I think that I may have had more fans in the rink than both teams! Rachel, Roger, Trent, Evelyn, Mom, Dad, Katie, Ava and even Cory came to watch.
Sunday 12. 20 Junior game in Hudson; Crusaders (3) vs. Mustangs (4) (the team is from Spooner, they don't call them the Knights anymore, but Donny is still on the bench) with Leah, Sam and Labuda supervising us. This is the first time that I have worked a Junior game with another female official or with any other female on the ice!

So here is the real, behind the scenes deal...

Mom, Dad, Katie (sister) and Ava (niece) pick me up Saturday 8:30 am and we are off to Iowa. We stop a few times along the way, check into the hotel and meet up with Joy and Roger to get something to eat. I get dropped off at the rink and they go back so Ava can swim in the pool; then they come and watch the game. Fun? Are you kidding me? This is Junior hockey! Oh yea, and I called the too many men penalty:) Sunday morning I hit the pool with Ava and Dad and we stop by Mason City on the way home to have eats with Sandy. What a packed two days!
